A six-metre structure rises in front of you – fragile, impossible-looking, held together by skill, trust, and bare hands. Bamboo is a spectacular outdoor circus work where the act of building is the performance itself. With bamboo poles, natural bindings, and their own bodies, accompanied by live music, the artists build a shifting landscape for daring acrobatics, agility, humour, and risk. Here, no trick appears ready-made. Everything takes shape before the audience’s eyes – held, lifted, tested, rebuilt. Everything depends on balance between strength and fragility, invention and collapse, one body and another. A playful, powerful reminder that being together is also a way of building the world.
NoFit State was founded in 1986 by five friends. During a politically charged time, in a recession, and as a creative reaction to the world around them, the circus was born. Thirty years since its beginnings, NoFit State still believes that the total outweighs the sum of the parts. The company lives together, works together, eats together, laughs and cries together – travelling in trucks, trailers and caravans and living and breathing as one community. This is what creates the spirit that is NoFit State and gives the work its heart and soul.
