BELOW ZERO COMPANY “RAAF”

“Raaf” is the Dutch word for “raven”, a bird of mythical meaning: a messenger between heaven and earth, and a clever creature that spends most of its life in pairs. Sweden’s first modern high-wire performance Raaf is an enchanting family adventure about friendship, life, and the bond between sisters. It celebrates the ties that keep us connected, even when we each follow our own path. In the performance, the tightrope dancers bring together the traditional discipline of high-wire walking and a warm, poetic choreographic language. Watching Raaf is like looking at clouds: if you look long enough, shapes, stories, and unexpected beauty begin to appear. Traditionally, this art form is based on keeping balance while walking along a metal cable high above the ground, often with a long balancing pole in hand.
During the summer of 2018, four circus artists set sail through the Swedish archipelago. By the time they returned to shore, the idea for Below Zero had come to life.
Below Zero is a Swedish contemporary circus company creating bold and innovative performances. Inspired by the country’s long, cold winters, the company explores themes of warmth, connection and human closeness, which have become defining elements of its artistic identity. The company’s name reflects the performers’ ability to appear almost weightless in motion—gliding through the air like drifting snowflakes, suspending time and creating the illusion that gravity no longer exists.
