CAMILLE PAYCHA “60 DEGREES OF SEPARATION”
Belgium
The performance 60 Degrees of Separation is inspired by social psychologist Stanley Milgram’s theory of six degrees of separation, which suggests that each of us is connected to every other person through no more than six handshakes. Bringing this idea into dialogue with aerial acrobatics, artist Camille Paycha creates an intimate yet collective experience accompanied by live music. The work explores the boundary between care and risk, forming an immersive and collaborative space: a drummer on a rolling platform, acrobats suspended in the air, and spectators whose presence becomes an integral part of the performance.
Camille Paycha is a circus artist, dramaturge, researcher, and teacher who works across performance creation, artistic mentoring, and circus theory. She is part of the artistic council at Fontys Academy for Circus and Performance Art (ACAPA) Tilburg, teaches embodied artistic research there, and has also supported students at the Centre National des Arts du Cirque (CNAC) in France since 2023. Her work combines conceptual artistic approaches with accessibility for broad audiences, often exploring themes such as care, violence, morality, humour, and collective experience through circus practice. Author’s performance Ice Skates And Other Cruelties, which was the Laureate of the European circus platform circusnext in 2020–2021, presented a solitary figure navigating a fragile world made of glass. In her work 60 Degrees of Separation, she has shifted toward collective performance and returned to her discipline of aerial straps, continuing her exploration of sustainable and emotionally resonant circus practices.
