COMPANY ALUD “MAELSTROM”
Belgium
How much strength does it take to allow yourself to be vulnerable? “Maelstrom” (In the Whirlwind) begins as a physical contest between two men – who can hold on longer, climb higher, appear braver. With astonishing power and elegance, they cut through the air on aerial straps that both support and relentlessly challenge the body. Accompanied by Baroque music, their bravado gradually begins to crack, and the game of “alpha males” transforms through emotion, surprise, and humour into a disarming reflection on masculinity, competition, closeness, and vulnerability. Perhaps true strength begins when there is no longer a need to win?
Native from Spain and Germany respectively, Daniel and Seraphim began collaborating out of a common passion for contemporary circus, and a desire to push past the conventional techniques of aerial straps, learning from partner acrobatics, dance and theatre as a way to develop a new and richer vocabulary, that can realise their artistic goals. They founded Company ALUD and since than produced and performed multiple circus projects together.
