International artists, the synergy of genres, workshops and discussions in the contemporary circus and street art festival “Re Riga!” August 18 – 23, 2018
New juggling techniques, the transformation of objects, satire and acrobatics, clowning, one drum and 234 juggling rings, clay and mimicry – the performances included in the festival’s program this year will provide an opportunity to discover the artistic effect of synergy created by circus, music, sculpture and dance. The festival will take place from August 18 till August 23 with warm-up performances at the Riga City Festival.
Tuning into the professional contemporary circus will start on August 18th and 19th during the Riga City Festival, where several performances will take place: ASUELTO by the dance company HURyCAN from Spain, performance FISURA by the street performer MURMUYO from Spain and GREGARIOUS by SOON COMPANY from Sweden. These performances will take place near the Latvian National Museum of Art on the Esplanade Square and will be free of charge.
The headliners of the festival program will perform on August 21st and 22nd. This year festival will host the show FANG, produced by one of the most avant-gardes and most sought-after circus associations in Europe – the contemporary circus troupe ANIMAL RELIGION from Catalonia. The show is the latest performance by the outstanding acrobat Quim Giron. It is a story about the Earth both as a kind of moving a vehicle and a place from which things appear and where they disappear. Fang or clay in this story is a means of experiencing a continuous change – from emptiness to a world full of strange creatures, in which the nature of man and clay converges.
Another headliner – the French circus troupe STOPTOÏ will perform their juggling show LOOP. This is a new juggling language and a new search of artistic expressions. There are 3 artists in the show, 234 juggling rings, 54 balls and a drum set. Artists create and transform objects, bodies, music, explore new forms, new sounds and new juggling techniques, thus attempting to break the idea of presentation at its core. The company was founded in 2016 by a musician – Gaëtan Allard and two jugglers – Gonzalo Fernández Rodríguez and Neta Oren. This show will be shown in the concert hall “Tu jau zini Kur!” on August 23rd at 19.00.
“The festival Re Riga! will take place for the sixth time and Riga has become accustomed to admire good contemporary circus, nevertheless art must deliver surprise and this year the circus will show itself as an open and attractive genre for cooperation with other fields of art,” says Mārtiņš Ķibers, artistic director of the “Re Riga!” festival.
This year, the performances of “Re Riga!” Will take place in the concert hall “Tu jau zini Kur!”, 10 Tallinas Street. The first tickets are available at a special price: 7 and 12 Eur; in August the ticket price will be: 10 – 15 Eur.
