DANIEL GULKO “LIFE, CIRCUS, AND EVERYTHING ELSE”
France
What could possibly go wrong when a chaotic lecture on the history of circus is delivered by an equally chaotic master?
On stage: a table, a blackboard, and a professor-clown with a remarkable talent for finding magnificent meaning in the most insignificant details. Daniel Gulko invites us on a comic, unpredictable, and occasionally surreal journey through the hidden histories of circus – from parade to pandemonium.
The history of circus is a story of danger and courage, of searching for one’s path and place, and of our need to come together and experience something out of the ordinary. Circus has always existed somewhere on the margins – sometimes welcomed, sometimes banished, at once outside society and right at its centre. In this haywire seminar, Gulko follows tangents, takes wrong turns, and wanders through the margins, only to end up in the centre of the circus ring.
