Contemporary circus festival RE RIGA! – a two-day circus art festival in the courtyard and arena of the Riga Circus
This year the contemporary circus and street art festival RE RIGA! will take place in the Riga Circus on August 20–21, featuring international artists with the latest discoveries of juggling and acrobatics, as well as talks about circus and circus school activities for children.
The festival’s main guest – Defracto Company from France– will present the show Dystonie. Guillaume Martinet and Eric Longequel started juggling while studying science. Although the arts have managed to lure them to their side, their desire for searching and experiments has not changed. The artists work with delight and determination and are convinced that juggling unites the body with objects in time and space. They juggle not only objects, juggling is their relationship with the outside world, juggling is their way of being in this world. Even if the show’s name sounds serious, Dystonie demonstrates a new juggling language that talks about important matters with a joyous and powerful energy. The show has won several international awards.
Dystonie will be performed on August 21 at 20:00 at the Riga Circus Arena.
Juggling, but this time combined with live music, poetry readings and rope acrobatics, will be presented in the show Three Men from the North by the artistic company The Nordic Council, in which … three men from the Nordic countries: Jakob Jobson of Sweden, Merri Heikkila of Finland and Bjarni Arnasson of Iceland will tell the story of working days, traditions and habits, as well as coffee and – why not? – knitted wool clothing. The work in progress, or the upcoming show, will be presented to viewers on August 20 at 20:00 in the Riga Circus arena; the show has been developed in cooperation with the Riga Circus and will be free of charge.
During both festival days in August 20–21 from 19 to 19:30 in the Riga Circus courtyard the trio Wise Fools will perform the show Trashpeze featuring highest grade acrobatics.
We are constantly told to want more. Everything should be bigger, better and newer. In Trashpeze three characters find themselves stranded in the land of trash. They are thrown out, abandoned and lost, as everything we no longer want. Through a strange and humorous absurdity, Trashpeze introduces explosive and unique circus techniques on triple trapeze, cloud swing and dance trapeze.
Wise Fools is a circus trio comprising artists from Finland and South Africa. The trio has worked with the world-famous Cirque du Soleil and GOP Varieté-Theater, while also performing internationally at various street art festivals in Korea, Spain, Belgium and Israel. The show is suitable for all age groups, it can be watched for free.
On both days from 18:30 to 21:00, the Riga Circus School playground for children will also be open.
The slogan “This is a celebration to people and minerals” used in the production application for the Dystonie show by the festival’s headliners, the French company Defracto, has been chosen as the slogan for the entire RE RIGA! this year. “The festival is a celebration, because by nature it is a special format that allows you to see the essence of the genre in a short time, and this year the festival is taking place in the magic Riga Circus, a place that is expected to be reconstructed soon,” Martins Kibers, the producer of the festival, points out.
The RE RIGA! festival will take place for the seventh year and is supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation and the Riga City Council.
